The original Olympic Games started in Greece in 776 BC. They took place in Olympia, a Greek town, until AD 393. There is a legend that says that Heracles was the creator of the Olympic Games. The Ancient Olympic Games were a sporting and religious event. They had ceremonies honouring Zeus.
The Modern Olympic Games started in 1896. Sir Pierre Frédy, Baron de Coubertin, was a man interested in sport and peace among nations. He created the International Olympic Committee. The Olympics are celebrated every four years, divided into Summer Games and Winter Games.
The Olympic flag is white and has five rings in five different colours. They represent the unity of the five continents. Here is a very famous phrase with Coubertin's ideals: "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part". It is called the Olympic Creed. The Olympic Flame is a torch taken by runners from Olympia to the city where the Olympic Games will take place (Beijing, China, in 2008).
