The most popular pet in Britain is the goldfish (27 million). The next is number is the cat (nearly 8 million). Then comes the dog (7 million). Other popular pets in British homes are the rabbit, the budgerigar, the hamster and the Guinea pig.
There are many programmes on TV about animals, and they are very popular. There are many houses for unwanted dogs and cats, and associations to protect animal rights.
