Houses in Britain are usually made of stone, tiles or brick. There are many different types of homes. In big cities like London most people live in blocks of flats. Semi-detached houses (two houses joined together) are the most popular in Britain. They have a garden at the back.
In most towns, people live in terraced houses. These are a long row of identical houses joined together. In the north of England, they built red brick terraced houses for factory workers during the Industrial Revolution. They were cheap and small.
Detached houses stand alone and they have a big garden and a garage. Inside, there is usually a kitchen, a living room and a toilet downstairs, and three of four bedrooms and the bathroom upstairs. Some houses have a fireplace and almost all of them have central heating.
