Britain is a very old country. Many different civilizations have lived there and left their remains. From Stone Age man to the present day, Celts, Romans, Normans from France, Middle Age man... they all have done their bit.
Stonehenge is the oldest monument in Britain. Some people think it was a Druid temple and others think it was an astronomical calculator. They started to build it in 3100 BC and they used until 1100 BC. An amazing period of 2000 years! The government has been responsible for maintaining the monument since 1918. It is a world heritage site, and a beautiful place to visit.
The Romans built Hadrian's Wall. It was a military fortification made of stone that separated the north of England, where the Roman Empire finished, from their enemies to the north (Scotland today). Hadrian's Wall was 80 Roman miles long (117 kilometres). It goes across the north of England from coast to coast. It is the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain.
