The English Channel is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean. It separates the island of Great Britain from France. In French it is called La Manche, "the sleeve". It is about 562 km long and it is only 34 km in the Strait of Dover.
There are some British islands in the Channel. The biggest island is the Isle of Wight near the English coast, and the Channel Islands near the coast of France. You can cross the channel from Dover, in England to Calais, in France by ferry. But you can also cross it by hovercraft in only 30 minutes!
Many people cross it using the Channel Tunnel. The tunnel is 50 km long under the sea. They started to build this tunnel in 1986 and finally opened in 1994. It connects the UK and France by rail.
