Arithmetic is working with numbers. It is part of Mathematics. The four basic arithmetic operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You probably use a calculator to do arithmetic, but we don't have a calculator right now, so let's calculate on our own.
Adding is finding the total or the sum of two or more numbers. The sign for addition is "plus". This is an easy sum, which is read: 25 plus 13 equals 38. You can also say add up to or make 38.
Subtracting is finding the difference between two numbers. An easy example: 45 minus 15 equals 30. You can also say: 45 take away 15 leaves 30. If the first number is smaller than the second one, then the difference is negative. This is read as 20 minus 80 equals negative 60.
Multiplying is finding the product of two numbers. Take an easy example: 7 times 9 is 63. You can also say "multiplied by".
Dividing is finding out how many times a number will go into another number. This operation is the opposite of multiplication. And here you are: 150 over 6 is 25. You can also say "divided by".
A fraction is a mathematical expression that relates two numbers, one divided by the other. For example, one half means one divided by two. In decimals, this is the same as zero point five.
Remember that in English we use the decimal point to express decimals, and a comma to express thousands and millions, for example: four thousand, three million five hundred thousand. Some basic fractions are: one half, one third, one quarter, one tenth.
